Exhibitions: Traumacube, 1992 by Vik Muniz
Stainless steel, iron pipe, audio, about 150x150x150 cm, weight 150 kg
Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato (Acquisto), in collaboration with ASM - Ambiente Servizi e Mobilità
From Thursday, November 8 to Saturday, November 10 - 2012
Vik Muniz (Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1961, lives and works in New York) reconfigures a large cube of stainless steel, basic form of construction, container or solid support, altering it dramatically compared to its usual condition, brutally subverting the established order intervention with a "traumatic" action which makes it look soft, fragile and unstable.
The transformation of the cube is fixed in the evidence physics and in the sound recording of the blows (to emphasize the destructive aspect of the work, reversing the conceptuality of the famous Box with the sound of its own making by Robert Morris, 1961), as well as the disturbing presence of the bar used to hit it. The violence evoked in the work undermines the certainties and the references upon which is based our knowledge.
The work will be on display to raise awareness and put attention to the importance of the restoration of contemporary art, so we will also be planning a conference entitled "The preventive conservation of contemporary art", scheduled for Friday, November 9, 2012 hours 10:00-13:30 and sponsored by the National Consortium of Universities for the Science and Technology of Materials - (SCIBEC-INSTM).
