Cavaniglia Pavilion, Fortezza da Basso, Florence
The square Torre del Circo, originally as high as one of the towers in the carceres of Milan in the late third century A.D. under the aegis of Emperor Maximilian, becomes in the eighth century, the bell tower of the church of the monastery of cloistered Benedictine. Flyover and embellished with a loggia with arches, La torre intertwined with the church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore.
In Milan it is considered as a very precious monument because it represents one of the few Roman buildings come to us in high without being demolition or additions. Due to the poor maintenance, weathering and pollution, over time it has triggered a state of general decay and serious structural problems that caused significant structural criticisms; the mortars were so poorly consistent and most of the brick elements were affected by dechoesions and exfoliations.
The meeting illustrates the various steps of the restoration work focusing the decision to enhance the structural behaviour, contributing to the recovery of stability all the constituents present: from mortars to the individual bricks, and to the stone aggregates from the parapets.
In particular, it will be showed: the diffuse system resistant, consisting of the process of “rifugatura” carried out through special mortars added with polyvinyl alcohol fibers, which created a kind of network of "invisible support ", the inclusion of localized carbon bars and steel braces placed in view of the scope of the fornix and the system of steel cables to ensure a balance of the architectural elements.
