Unveiling the Annunciation: diagnostic analyses and restoration for understanding one of Benozzo Gozzoli's masterpiece

Art-Test di Luciano Marras e C. - ICCOM-CNR Pisa
Saturday November 10, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. - Sala Bianchi
Cavaniglia Pavilion, Fortezza da Basso, Florence

The meeting aims to illustrate the results obtained from the complex restoration of one of the most important historical and artistic emergency of the city of Narni: the Annunciation of the Virgin by Benozzo Gozzoli.' The very detailed series of investigations conducted by the Art-Test of Pisa under the direct scientific supervision of the research group ICCOM-CNR of Pisa, assisted the restoration work carried out by the CBC and directed by the Superintendency of Historical Artistic and Ethno-anthropological Heritage of Umbria.
Despite a very troubled conservative issue, rebuilt through the study of all the traces discovered on the artwork, the historical photos and the analytical diagnostic data, the painting still retained the ability to provide many details on the technical procedures used by the artist and painting. Objective of the restoration work was just to return a full legibility work, allowing you to appreciate the artistic innovations and consolidated technical preparation of the artist Benozzo Gozzoli. The Annunciation of Narni, which depict the same image of Mary of the predella of the Assumption of the Vatican Pinacoteca, was involved in an extensive campaign of diagnostic imaging techniques: Visible Multispectral Imaging, IR reflectography scanning, false-color IR, Multispectral UV fluorescence associated with the multilayer analysis, 3D multispectral colorimetric measurements and also specific surveys of microsample (analysis in section glossy, SEM, and spectroscopy LIBS and FT-IR), XRF, Active Thermography long wave and Digital X-rays.

Speakers: Luciano Marras, Emanuela Grifoni, Margherita Romano, Vincenzo Palleschi, Carla Bertorello
