Painting materials and the triumph of ephemeral in contemporary art

Since a hundred year, the material aspect of an artwork creation was cancelled by the triumph of the gesture. Why does an artist make himself preparations, colours and charcoals in the conceptual art age? We are sure that it is not for a sort of return to an academic art; probably artist needs to create something unique in terms of tools and painting materials.
