The use of synthetic polymers in contemporary art work

Open Care S.p.A.
Training Area – Friday Novermber 12- from 12:15 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

In the recent last years we noticed that different fields as art, fashion and design, met and mixed themselves in numerous occasions. Artists became designers and designers became artists, contemporary art galleries exhibited design artefacts and architects designed shoes. It is more and more difficult to distinguish a design object from a contemporary artwork; boundaries are always liable to change. Any age has its expressive codes and its expressing materials and in this sense we can easily affirm that 20th century excellence material is Plastic. This term expresses a wider range of synthesis polymers which have different usage and characteristics (thermoplastic polymers, thermosetting polymers) different added additives etc. Synthesis polymers face two types of deteriorations: chemical (breaking of the carbon binders due to light, heat, gas, humidity exposition) and physic (lacks and lacunae, additives migrations). Anyway we cannot predict anything about the plastic materials ageing process and about the most properly conservation methodologies. The meeting presents two case histories: Physic deterioration: Cesàr Baldaccini, Compressed motorcycle, 1975 – Chemical deterioration: Loris Cecchini, Stage evidence (untilted), 2001.
Conservator main aim is to slow down or stop the deterioration process and to prevent ageing damages; it is necessary so a documentation effort and a series of preservation actions during the movement, packaging, storage and display process.
Speaker: Isabella Villafranca Soissons
