The restoration of a recently discovered paintings by Paolo da Caylina il Giovane
Superintendence of the Architectural and landscape Heritage of Brescia
Training Area - Thursday November 11- from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
The conference is based on the intervention of conservation on the church of S. Maria Nascente in Fiumicello (Brescia), carried out after the recovery of some signs of the ancient canonical church. Researchers and scholars knew very well the existence of the old church but they hadn’t any sign or finds relating to its history and its changes. Some stratigraphy analyses carried out by the Superintendence of Brescia on the plaster surfaces showed some traces of old frescoes belonging to the ancient church. They were recovered through the demolition of the floors partitions and of the plasters of the 20th century. The discovered pictorial cycle shows at least two decorative parts: in the most recent one, it is possible to distinguish the characteristics painting by Paolo da Caylina il Giovane, a painter from Brescia who worked with Vincenzo Foppa. The paintings can be dated around the third decade of the 16th century immediately after the work by Caylina in Santa Giulia. The intervention of conservation showed also the religious value of the building: trogh the studies conducted on the old plasters, it was possible to reconstruct the old geometrical dimensions of the ancient vaults built with woods and iron in a sacred contextualization of the ambient.
