The use of laser equiptment on wall paintings in a hypogeum environment. First experiences in Roman and Sicilian catacombs
Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra
Saturday November 13- from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sala Leonetto Tintori
The cleaning problems which restorers have to face frequently in the hypogeum mural paintings are usually connected with the presence of calcareous layers which have a white and grey chromatic appearance and carbon residuals which deteriorate its original colours.
The efforts made above all through the use of the mechanical cleaning method had not great results. The laser cleaning technique instead gave a very good level of control of the cleaning operations with very good results.
Speakers:
Barbara Mazzei, Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra
Gigliola Patrizi, restorer.
